Green Day Confirms 'Awesome as F**k' Live Album in New Trailer

Music : Green Day Confirms 'Awesome as F**k' Live Album in New Trailer
Green Day has confirmed it will release "Awesome As F**k," a new live CD with an accompanying bonus DVD, in March. The band announced the news via an online video trailer that debuted on YouTube today (Jan. 10).

Green Day first revealed it was working on a live album at an August 2010 concert in Denver, where the punk trio told fans the show was being recorded and unveiled a new track, "Cigarettes and Valentines." Though it's been widely rumored that "Awesome As F**k will drop on Mar. 15 ever since a listing for the set on the Amazon UK store included that date, a rep for the band tells Billboard.com that an exact street date has not been locked in yet.

Billboard Bits: Green Day Working on Live Album

"Awesome As F**k" marks the second live release for Green Day, after 2005's "Bullet in a Bible." The band's last studio album, "21st Century Breakdown," was released in 2009 and has sold 1 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan, while prior album "American Idiot" sold 6 million and spawned a Broadway musical of the same name. After taking over the role of St. Jimmy in the production for one week in September, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong rejoined "American Idiot" on Broadway on New Year's Day, for another run of 50 dates ending Feb. 27.

Kanye West and Jay-Z's 'H.A.M.' Single Debuts Online

Music : Kanye West and Jay-Z's 'H.A.M.' Single Debuts Online
"H.A.M.," the first offering from Kanye West and Jay-Z's forthcoming collaborative album "Watch the Throne," premiered online just after midnight on Tuesday morning (Jan. 11), debuting on a dedicated Facebook page for the single.

Listen: Kanye West and Jay-Z, "H.A.M."

Over a menacing production by Lex Luger (Rick Ross' "B.M.F.," Waka Flocka Flame's "Hard in Da Paint") highlighted by dramatic strings and sampled operatic vocals, the hip-hop heavyweights trade boasts about power, women and wealth and proclaim themselves to be going "H.A.M." -- or "Hard As a Mothaf**ka," as they chant rapidly in the chorus.

"Got'em jumpin' out the building/Watch out below/A million out the door/I'm about to go, H.A.M.," West raps on the track, while Jay-Z spits, "I swam waters with great whites/Y'all mothaf**ckas would've been chewed/I hustle with vultures late night/Y'all mothaf**kas would've been fooled."

"H.A.M." is the lead single from West and Jay-Z's "Watch the Throne" album, which was originally slated to drop this week but is now reportedly due in March. The track was set to premiere on the same day Britney Spears' new single "Hold It Against Me," but the latter ended up hitting the net on Monday and averting a direct face-off between two hotly anticipated songs.

Bootsy Collins Taps Snoop Dogg, George Clinton for First Album in Five Years

Music : Bootsy Collins Taps Snoop Dogg, George Clinton for First Album in Five Years
desire to memorialize his heroes -- including James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Parliament-Funkadelic guitarist Garry Shider and jazz legends such as Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis -- drove Bootsy Collins to make "Tha Funk Capitol of the World," his first new album in five years.

"In 2008 we went out and did a tribute to James Brown tour with...as many of the JBs together as I could," the iconic bassist and bandleader, who's worked with Brown as well as Parliament-Funkadelic and his own Rubber Band, tells Billboard.com. "That really got me thinking about all these great cats who are no longer around and how people are just forgetting about them, and the music is becoming so watered down now. We're forgetting the ones that really opened the door. Since I'm still here, I really wanted to connect those dots...so young people can see that what they think is so new isn't so new."

The 16 tracks on "Tha Funk Capitol of the World" -- due out April 26 on Mascot Records -- were written and recorded during the past two and a half years, according to Collins. They feature a stellar guest list that includes P-Funk mate George Clinton and Shider's widow, Linda, on "Garry Shider Tribute;" the rap trio of Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube and Public Enemy's Chuck D, on "Hip Hop @ Funk U;" Musiq Soulchild and Tom Joyner, on "Yummy, I Got the Munchies;" Bobby Womack and Collins' brother, the late guitarist Catfish Collins, on "Don't Take My Funk;" actor Samuel L. Jackson ("After These Messages"); Dr. Cornel West ("Freedumb") and Rev. Al Sharpton on the Brown tribute, "JB -- Still the Man."

The speaking voice of Jimi Hendrix, meanwhile, shows up on "Mirrors Tell Lies." "We've got him speaking about certain things that went on in his career and how he saw things," says Collins, who narrated the "Jimi Hendrix Voodoo Child" documentary for "West Coast Seattle Boy" box set released in November. "He's speaking through it in different spots. It's pretty cool, a different approach to a song, I think."

Bela Fleck, Victor Wooten and Dennis Chambers, meanwhile, play on a "country meets funk, folk kind of thing" called "If Looks Could Kill," while Collins is putting the finishing touches on a tribute track called "The Jazz Greats," which will include guest performances by George Duke and possibly Herbie Hancock.

"I wanted to kind of expand and not just have an album of only funk," Collins explains. "I wanted to add a little rock, a little jazz, a little gospel in there, just come up with this thing where I can break out into a whole new kind of area. You still get a whole lot of funk, but at the same time we took a few different approaches."

Collins is planning appearances at the NAMM convention Jan. 12-16 in Anaheim and on Feb. 28 at the private Hard Rock Funk Legends show in New York City, but he also hopes to tour behind "Tha Funk Capitol of the World" this year.

"The next project is to try to work that out," he says. "(The show) would have to be based around this album, not based around what I've done in the past...All these (guests) are up for it, so it's a matter of scheduling...maybe get one or two people to show up at certain gigs. That would be amazing. I'm into challenge. I'm into change and doing things differently. This would be something different for me."

The full track listing for "The Funk Capitol of the World" includes:

1. "Intro"
2. "Hip Hop @ Funk U" (ft. Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, & Chuck D)
3. "Mirrors Tell Lies (ft. Jimi Hendrix)

11. "Minds Under Construction" (ft. Buckethead & (Z-Class))
12. "Siento Bombo" (ft. Olvido Ruiz & Ouiwey)
13. "Garry Shider Tribute" (ft. George Clinton & Linda Shider)

Norah Jones, Scarlett Johannson Sing on Autism Film Soundtrack

Music :
Norah Jones, Scarlett Johannson Sing on Autism Film Soundtrack
Ben Harper, Bob Weir, Steven Stills and Vincent Gallo have in common?

All have lent their voices to the soundtrack for a documentary about autism, which will be released Tuesday on iTunes.

"Wretches & Jabberers" follows two men with autism as they travel the world, aiming to change attitudes about their condition.

Musician J.Ralph said he signed on to compose the score for the film, but was so moved by the men's story that he wrote another 20 songs -- a complete soundtrack -- and asked some of music's best-known artists to give voice to them.

Stills said using the men's own words "as the foundation of the lyric was what made our song fly."

"I am extremely proud of our work," he said, calling the effort a "truly remarkable experience."

The documentary, directed by Oscar winner Gerardine Wurzburg, will be released in theaters in April in honor of National Autism Awareness Month.

"Today is a green day, it's all about Philly and Green Bay/One of which will be sick when they home watchin' the replay," he raps.

In 'Country Strong' Movie, Gwyneth Paltrow Channels Her Inner Singer

Music : In 'Country Strong' Movie, Gwyneth Paltrow Channels Her Inner Singer

" Country Strong," out in theaters today (Jan. 7), represents an odd amalgamation of entertainment genres. Pop stars Britney Spears and Michael Jackson inspired the film's heartbreaking theme, fleshed out by Gwyneth Paltrow, who is cast as fallen singer Kelly Canter. Meanwhile, country star Tim McGraw portrays Canter's manager/husband and sings just one song: a duet with Paltrow.

Writer/director Shana Feste wrote the bulk of the screenplay in 2008, moved by the personal drama Spears was experiencing in the public forum. Jackson's 2009 death occurred as she was finishing the script.

"We build these artists up and celebrate them," Feste says. "Then at the first sign of weakness, we rally around their downfall. Then we want to build them back up for a comeback. How difficult to live life like that in public."

Born in the California beach community of Palos Verdes, Feste also spent summers on her father's Texas ranch after her parents divorced. That background helped her meld the arc of a Hollywood starlet with the dusty realities of America's heartland.

"Country music still focuses on storytelling which, as a writer, is so important to me," Feste says. "The themes that country music deals with-love, heartbreak, betrayal-those are right up my alley as a drama director."

Music remains at the heart of the "Country Strong" storyline. More than 50 songs are heard in the film, including performances by Paltrow and fellow actors Leighton Meester -- an artist signed to Universal Republic who plays a former pageant queen with a dynamic set of pipes -- and Garrett Hedlund, whose gruff vocal qualities represent an alt-country vibe. They're presented along with new recordings by Sara Evans, Chris Young & Patty Loveless, Ronnie Dunn and Hank Williams Jr. All of these artists appear on the RCA soundtrack that arrived Oct. 26. Debuting at No. 16 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart, the soundtrack is now No. 37. It has sold 38,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The film also incorporates spoken references to Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings, plus sonic airings of such classics as Roger Miller's "Chug-a-Lug," Hank Williams' "Honky Tonk Blues" and Don Gibson's "Sea of Heartbreak."The actors worked with established Nashville producers-Byron Gallimore (McGraw, Sugarland), Nathan Chapman (Taylor Swift) and Frank Liddell (Miranda Lambert)-who helped them gain a level of credibility within the genre.

"It speaks very well to our actors that their performances seemingly are on par with our established artists," music supervisor Randall Poster says. "The quality control is really good."

RCA released Paltrow's title song as a single in July, allowing it a long lead time to build awareness of the movie and her character. The track moves 36-35 on Hot Country Songs this week.

"It's good to give people time to discover a movie like this-a complex, relationship-based movie-through screenings and talking about it as they connect the song with the movie," Paltrow says.

She bolstered the marketing campaign by making her live debut as a country singer on the Nov. 10 telecast of the CMA Awards. Vince Gill provided backing vocals for Paltrow on the show.
